   Autism

Exactly what is autism? Austism is a developmental problem that usually becomes obvious before the age of three. There's an alarming rise in the number of children who are diagnosed with autism (nearly 1 in every 136 children has some signs of autism spectrum disorder). Though laboratory tests can help in the treatment of children with autism there's no one lab test that makes the diagnosis. Instead, the diagnosis is made by looking for a group of common behaviors that include:
  • Delayed speech Poor eye contact
  • No attempt to imitate sounds or actions of parents
  • Not responding when called by name
  • Very sensitive to bright light, loud sounds and new textures (foods included)
  • No pointing at objects, poor grasp, not waving “bye-bye”
  • Repetitive motions like hand flapping or rocking
Severe behaviors like head-banging that might cause injury are less common but can be part of the picture as well. Until children are about three years old it’s unusual for a firm diagnosis of autism to be made. That’s why paying attention when a child is an infant or toddler can be so important. (www.featofnc.org/chat.html) We want to encourage parents to have their children evaluated by a qualified professional that can help them find resources to defeat autism. We have put together a computerized questionnaire that can help parents evaluate their own child's status. If signs of autism are present it's important to know that many of these problems can be resolved. It is not hopeless and you are not helpless.

Because the autism problem is relatively new, most physicians have little experience or training in treating autistic children. Frequently they haven’t been convinced that there is much that can be done to improve these children’s futures. Fortunately, there is a growing community of physicians who focus on the needs of autistic children and their families. One organization is called “DAN” which stands for “Defeat Autism Now!” This group has been able to build a powerful non-toxic treatment plan that can frequently reverse many children’s illnesses. I use lots of the treatments and strategies in The DAN protocol with great success in my practice. Many children respond within days and weeks and others take longer.
