The latest news on heart disease shows that surgery (CABG or
stent placement) or catheterization are no better at saving lives than medical
treatment at five years. In fact, it
seems that people who got more aggressive intervention had a higher risk of
death at the five year point. This could
be due to the fact that these were sicker people to begin with, but I suspect
that the “less is better” mantra applies to cardiac care as well as every other
form of medicine. The medical care that
people received was blood pressure medicine, nitroglycerin (nitro – under the
tongue) and other drugs that support heart circulation. One of the big players in this whole process
is cholesterol lowering medication which has some serious side effects that we
eliminate with natural treatment.

Since we know that invasive procedures like surgery are
excellent for acute problems like pending heart attack or unstable angina
(chest pain) we always want to be open to that possibility. In everyone else who doesn’t have acute
changes I suggest the least toxic methods to address heart blood vessel
narrowing (Coronary heart disease – CHD).
Instead of medication that creates side effects that can’t be tolerated
I offer patients non-drug treatments as well as diet and exercise to improve
circulation and reduce the impact of cholesterol buildup on the arterial walls.
These treatments include:
1. Policosanol 20
mg. (Sugar Cane Wax Extract can reduce cholesterol by 20%)
2. Red Yeast Rice
600 mg. (potential 20 % reduction in cholesterol)
3. CoQ10 100 mg.
twice daily (improves heart pumping function)
4. Niacin 500 mg.
sustained release (limits flushing and increases good cholesterol)
5. Fish oils 2-12
grams daily (controls inflammation)
This is only the short list but the more we learn about
keeping the heart healthy and reversing the effects of bad fats on the artery
walls the better natural treatment looks.
Some of my patients have cholesterol numbers in the 300’s or 400’s and
require medication to get their numbers into a healthy range.
I recommend fibrates (Gemfibrozil and TriCor)
and add Zetia for further reduction adding statin drugs only as a last resort
(by this time I have usually turned the case over to a skilled
cardiologist).
As you can tell, I really
support patients in looking for a safe, low side-effect profile alternative to
the statin drugs.
We've seen cholesterol
numbers drop from 290 to 180 with natural treatment alone.
If anyone tells you it can’t be done, don’t
buy it!
You deserve the best treatment
available.
Never settle for Less!
